(44) 菱川師宣記念館

Hishikawa Moronobu was a painter in the Edo period and is known as the founder of Ukiyoe style.  This municipal art museum located near his birthplace in Kyoan-town is named after him, and focuses on Ukiyoe style paintings. This winter, their special exhibit is titled Edo Gourmet Journal, and shows paintings related to food culture in the Edo period.  This is going to be a fun and rare opportunity to learn about not only art but also lifestyle of people in Edo at that time.

江戸時代の画家・菱川師宣は、浮世絵画の創始者として知られています。鋸南町の彼の生誕地近くに位置する菱川師宣記念館は、浮世絵を中心とした展示をする町立美術館です。この冬には「江戸グルメ紀行」と題し、江戸時代の食文化を題材にした作品を展示しています。美術作品だけでなく、江戸の時代の庶民のライフスタイルが学べる稀な機会ですね

(43) マキの生垣

If you stroll around residential areas in Minamiboso, you often find nicely trimmed high, green hedges. The tree maki, a conifer with narrow leaves very common in the area, is the tree of Chiba Prefecture. The kind is also found in precincts of temples and shrines, and they are often very big and very old. Gardeners get especially busy working on the hedges before local festivals and new years, as people would like to welcome these holy days with neatly trimmed hedges.

南房総の昔からの住宅地を歩くと、人の背丈をはるかに超えるみごとな緑の生垣のつらなりがみられます。使われている「マキ」の木は千葉県の木に指定されており、南房総では大変身近な樹木です。生垣や植木に用いられ、また、神社やお寺の境内に大木がみられることも。地区の祭礼前や年末には、植木屋さんが引っ張りだこ。お祭りやお正月を、きれいに刈り込んだ生垣で迎えるのです。

(42) 源頼朝上陸地

Minamoto no Yoritomo was the warrior who established Kamakura shogunate in 12th century. Before he came into power, he lost a battle in today’s Kanagawa Prefecture, and crossed Tokyo Bay by a boat. He probably landed at Ryushima Beach in Kyonan-town, and the locals are proud that the historical figure stepped onto their land. The monument stands on the beach with the transparent water, and the spot is often busy with people enjoying surf fishing.

12世紀に鎌倉幕府を開いた源頼朝。彼が天下を取る前に、戦に敗れた石橋山から船で東京湾を渡り上陸したのが、現在の鋸南町竜島海岸と言われています。町の人々はこの歴史を大変誇りに思っており、地域には頼朝にまつわる伝説が数多く残されています。石碑は、透明度の高い大六海岸と竜島海岸の間に立ち、あたりは磯釣りスポットとしても人気があります。
