Charms of Minamiboso (32) Mano-ji Temple
（32） 真野寺
Mano-ji Temple in Minamiboso-city was founded about 1300 years ago, and houses a unique mask-wearing Goddess of Mercy, not found anywhere else in Japan. But the temple is more well known for Daikoku-sama, the deity who is associated with wealth and prosperity. At the Daikokuten Festival, held annually on February 6, the Buddhist sermon starts at midnight, and the precinct becomes busy with visitors, who also enjoy the food stalls that line the approach to the temple.
南房総市久保に位置する725年開創の智山派のお寺。御本尊は、全国でも例のない、お面をつけた覆面千手観音。また、木彫の大きな大黒天が安置され、地元では「真野の大黒様」と呼ばれ親しまれています。2月6日の大黒天大祭には商売繁盛などのご利益を祈願しに、深夜0時からのご開帳および護摩法要に合わせて多くの人がお参りに訪れ、露店も数多く出てにぎわいます。
冬休みは12/22（火）〜1/3（日）です
早いもので、12月も半ばをすぎました。
サビーネ館山スクール鋸南スクールは、12/22（火）から1/3（日）まで、冬休みとなります。
なお、火曜日午後3時以降のクラスについては、12/22も振替レッスンを行っています。

森林火災義援金にご支援いただいた皆様へ
カリフォルニア在住のカブリオ大学名誉教授 サンディ・ライドン氏より、以下のメッセージが届きました。（英文のあとに和訳）
To the generous and kind people of Minamiboso:
The year 2020 has been difficult for all of us who live on the shores of the Pacific. We all have been struggling with COVID-19, and then our neighbors in the Santa Cruz Mountains were hit by a devastating wildfire in August caused by lightning. Over 900 families lost their homes and belongings.
Yet, despite your own coronavirus difficulties there in Japan, with the leadership of our friends, you generously donated a sizable amount which was wired to us.
Those funds will be donated to a wonderful non-profit organization named Valley Churches United which is run by volunteers. Valley Churches United is located in the middle of the fire zone and had to evacuated for several weeks during the fire. Thanksfully their membership and buildings were not harmed, and they were able to return and begin helping those who were less fortunate.
But, your generosity has done something else – it has inspired us to also raise funds for the fire victims. The motto of VCU is “Neighbors helping Neighbors” and we believe that your generosity has shown that we – the people of the Monterey Bay Region and Minamiboso ARE truly neighbors. Since way back in 1897 when the first men from Minamiboso came to our region, we have had a strong connection – broken for a time during the Great Pacific War, but now being re-connected.
We thank you and now we’ll see if we can match your generosity.

南房総地域の皆様
2020年は、太平洋岸に住む私たちにとって困難な年になりました。新型コロナウイルスと格闘の最中、落雷によって発生した8月の大規模な森林火災がサンタクルーズの内陸地方を襲いました。これにより900以上の世帯が住む家や家財を失いました。
そんな中、自身もコロナ禍に見舞われている日本で、私たちの友人たちが中心となって集められたという多額の義援金が、先日我々のもとに届きました。
この義援金は、ボランティアで運営されている非営利組織「ヴァリー・チャーチズ・ユナイテッド」に寄付されることになりました。「ヴァリー・チャーチズ・ユナイテッド（VCU）」は、火災が起こった地域内に位置し、火災時には彼ら自身が避難を余儀なくされました。幸い、建物やメンバーに被害はなく、火災収束後、メンバーはただちに業務に戻り、被害にあった人たちの救済に取り組んでいます。
皆様からのお志は、また、私たちに、私たち自身もまた火災の犠牲者への支援をしよう、と思い立つきっかけを作ってくれました。VCUのモットーは「隣人が隣人を救う」というものです。皆様からのお志が、まさしく、南房総地域とモントレー湾地域が「隣人同士」であるということを示しています。太平洋戦争によって一度は断ち切られたものの、1897年に南房総から最初の人々がこの地にやってきて以来、私たちは硬い絆で結ばれているのです。
皆様に心より感謝申し上げます。同時に、私たちもできることをやってまいります。

ご報告
10月2日から11月10日まで、「カリフォルニア森林火災義援金」を募らせていただきました。おかげさまでたくさんの皆様からお心が寄せられ、総額は、予想をはるかに上回る62万7,330円となりました。
11月12日、送金手数料を差し引いた61万4,830円を、私と取引のあるパフィシックハーバートラベルさん経由で、カブリオ大学名誉教授サンディ・ライドン氏にお送りしました。
ライドン教授からのメッセージにもあるとおり、義援金はその後、任意ボランティア団体「ヴァリー・チャーチズ・ユナイテッド」に寄付され、森林火災で家を失った方などへの救済に役立てられる予定です。
この募金にあたりご協力をいただきました皆様に、心より感謝申し上げます。
私たちには、太平洋の向こう側に、お互いを思いやる友人たちがいます。この友情を、これからも大切に育み、伝えていきたいと思います。コロナ感染が収束し、また直接の交流ができる日を待ち望みましょう。ありがとうございました。

Charms of Minamiboso (31) Amatsu Shinmei-gu Shrine
(31) 天津神明宮
Amatsu Shinmei-gu shrine, which has an association with the Ise Shrine, has more than 800 years of history. In the precinct, you will find rare trees called Marubachisha. Kamogawa City is said to be the northern limit of their habitat, so they are designated as a protected species by Chiba Prefecture. This visitor friendly shrine, equipped with bike stands, large parking space and clean bathrooms, could be a great spot for your “hatsumode” or New Year’s visit. Have a happy New Year!
「房州伊勢の宮」として800年の歴史を誇る天津神明宮。境内には「マルバチシャ」という珍しい木があります。ゴワゴワとした丸い葉っぱのこの木は鴨川が北限とされ、千葉県指定の天然記念物だそうです。駐車場やトイレ、バイクスタンドも整備されたすてきな神社、新年にお参りしてみてはいかがでしょうか。よいお年をお迎えください。
