保田小学校

Hota Shogakko is a former elementary school that was renovated into a tourist attraction in 2015. While retaining much of its nostalgic atmosphere, the building is home to restaurants, souvenir shops, public baths, and accommodations. The renovated school was popular with tourists until the area was hit by Typhoon Faxai in September, damaging much of the town. Hota Shogakko reopened shortly after the disaster; however, and together with the locals, it has been working hard to bring tourists back to Kyonan Town.

地元の子供たちが通った「保田小学校」は、閉校後の2015年に観光施設として生まれ変わりました。懐かしい小学校の雰囲気はそのままに、レストラン、お土産屋さん、公衆浴場、そして宿泊施設があります。多くの観光客が訪れていましたが、9月に地域を襲った台風15号で鋸南町全体が大きな被害を受けました。現在、町の人たちは懸命に復旧作業に取りかかっています。保田小学校も、被害に負けずに営業中です。

崖観音

Though its official name is Daifuku-ji temple, locals call it Gake Kannon or Cliff Temple, as this striking vermillion building is poised on a cliff. Peering inside, you can see that the building was built to protect the Goddess of Mercy (Kannon) who is carved directly into the cliff face. Also, don’t forget to look up the ceiling, where brightly colored flowers and birds are painted against a lapis lazuli blue. Above all, the breathtaking view of Tateyama Bay at sunset is something that you don’t want to miss.

大福寺という正式名がありますが、地元の人たちが使う愛称は「崖観音」。その名の通り、朱塗りの観音堂が崖にへばりつくように建てられています。お堂は、崖に直接掘られた観音様をお守りしているのです。ぜひ天井を見上げるのも忘れないでください。鮮やかな青色の地に、様々な花鳥が描かれています。そして、ここから眺める館山湾の夕陽も、見逃さないでくださいね。

高家神社

Takabe Shrine, located in the Chikura area, is the only Shinto Shrine in Japan that enshrines the god of culinary arts. Steep stone steps take you to the main building with a thatched roof, and stands on a sunny hill looking down to the Pacific Ocean. Chefs and people involved in the food industry from all over the nation come to visit. On October 17, you will have the opportunity to see the Hochoshiki, or “Knife Ceremony”, a unique shinto ritual offered to the god by preparing fish with just a knife and a pair of chopsticks.

千倉町にある高家神社は、日本で唯一、料理の神様をお祭りしている神社です。長い石段を上がると目に飛び込んでくるのが、太平洋を望む南斜面に立つ藁葺き屋根の社殿です。日本各地から料理人や食品関係の人々が参拝に訪れます。10月17日には、庖丁と箸のみで魚をさばく、珍しい庖丁式が奉納されます。
