(36) 洲崎神社

Sunosaki Shrine stands on the tip of Sunosaki Cape, the western most part of Tateyama City. Climbing up steep steps, the 300-year-old shrine building welcomes you against the beautiful green of natural forest. If you turn around and see where you came from, you will be dazzled by the view of the ocean spreading from down below to the horizon. At the festival in August, the portable shrine is carried down the 147 steps, while the carriers roll the shrine wildly.  

館山市の最西端、洲崎の突端に位置する洲崎神社。急勾配のコンクリートの階段を上り切ると、江戸時代に建てられたというお社が、美しい自然林を背景に鎮座しています。振り返れば、登ってきた階段のはるか下から広がる東京湾の景色に思わず息を呑みます。8月の例大祭では、この147段の階段を御神輿が勇壮にもみさしを繰り返しながら降りていくのです。
