Located near Tokyo Bay Ferry terminal, its modern-looking exterior of concrete and Boshu rock, excavated from Nokogiriyama, catches your eye. Nokogiriyama museum, small but full-fledged, stores and exhibits art works by local artists, and organizes planned exhibits that meet a high standard. With the annex introducing the history of Nokogiriyama stone cutting industry, the museum also serves as a center for preservation activities around Nokogiriyama.


Charms of Minamiboso (44) Hishikawa Moronobu Memorial Museum

Hishikawa Moronobu was a painter in the Edo period and is known as the founder of Ukiyoe style.  This municipal art museum located near his birthplace in Kyoan-town is named after him, and focuses on Ukiyoe style paintings. This winter, their special exhibit is titled Edo Gourmet Journal, and shows paintings related to food culture in the Edo period.  This is going to be a fun and rare opportunity to learn about not only art but also lifestyle of people in Edo at that time.


Charms of Minamiboso (43) Maki hedges

If you stroll around residential areas in Minamiboso, you often find nicely trimmed high, green hedges. The tree maki, a conifer with narrow leaves very common in the area, is the tree of Chiba Prefecture. The kind is also found in precincts of temples and shrines, and they are often very big and very old. Gardeners get especially busy working on the hedges before local festivals and new years, as people would like to welcome these holy days with neatly trimmed hedges.


Charms of Minamiboso (42) Minamoto no Yoritomo Landing Site

Minamoto no Yoritomo was the warrior who established Kamakura shogunate in 12th century. Before he came into power, he lost a battle in today’s Kanagawa Prefecture, and crossed Tokyo Bay by a boat. He probably landed at Ryushima Beach in Kyonan-town, and the locals are proud that the historical figure stepped onto their land. The monument stands on the beach with the transparent water, and the spot is often busy with people enjoying surf fishing.

If you are seeking a place to learn about nature in this area, Tateyama Bird Sanctuary can be an ideal spot. This prefecture-run facility includes a 22-ha forest with several hiking trails, and the visitor center houses a nature museum, a library, and a workshop. It also offers various events, such as craft workshops, bird watching, and pizza making. You will be amazed to learn that there are so many kinds of birds you can observe in this area.
